An estimate for a monthly salary on SARS's tables, worked out in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere. Payslips can differ with travel and other allowances, fringe benefits, other deductions and the employer's rounding.

How it is worked out

  1. Remuneration. Salary plus the employer's retirement and medical aid contributions, which are taxable fringe benefits. A cost-to-company package already contains them.
  2. Retirement deduction. Employee and employer retirement contributions, up to 27,5% of remuneration and R 430 000 a year.
  3. Tax for the year. The tax table on taxable income, less the rebate for the employee's age, less the medical scheme fees tax credits (R 376 a month for the main member, R 376 for the first dependant, R 254 for each further dependant). PAYE is a twelfth of it.
  4. UIF. 1% from the employee and 1% from the employer, on pay up to R 17 712 a month.
  5. SDL. 1% of remuneration, paid by the employer when the annual payroll is over R 500 000.
  6. Gross-up. Net to gross finds the smallest gross salary, to the cent, whose take-home pay reaches the amount wanted. A bonus is taxed as SARS taxes an annual payment: the tax on the year's income with the bonus, less the tax without it; the bonus gross-up finds the gross bonus that leaves the amount wanted after that tax.
